Introduction and Video Games

Welcome everyone to Cinemabun.com

This is our first post and hopefully it will give you a taste of how we aim to do things here at Cinemabun, which is to give a more interactive form of Movie news, reviews, and discussions. Feel free to get involved in the comments, and expect the other contributers to the site to hop in and voice their opinions on anything and everything movie related on the site. Also remember to check out the news section which will be an entirely different thread of content from your soon to be favorite bloggers.

To kick things off I was thinking about 2 weeks ago how I loved the Xbox 360 game Gears of War. It is intense and thrilling and fun, but that it like other great games would not translate well to a movie. Then I found out they are optioning for a film now, and like the failed attempt at a Halo movie I think it is unlikely to succeed. Namely because the great gameplay is unique to the video game medium, and when you look at the story which the movie would be based on you have - "Space Marines versus Aliens". Well that movie has been made...like 15 times. Here are a few, Aliens (Awesome) Starship Troopers (Good), Doom (Repellent). So while I love the game, this news is not exciting for me.

However, it raises the question/discussion "Which Video Games do we want to see get a Movie?" There are many but they are not always the most popular titles. This below is my personal list.

1. Fatal Frame (PS2) - Far and Away the scariest game ever made, and it lends itself easily to a horror movie. The story from any of the games would be usuable, and the camera view battle system could make for some intense movie sequences. I will be at this movie opening night, and then I will sleep at my parent's house.

Note - Dreamworks bought the rights to Fatal Frame a long time ago and have stalled on doing anything with it.

2. Zelda (Nintendo) - I know your first thought is of a kid Zelda and yes, that would be gay. But imagine a Neverending Story like approach which has all the whisy and fantasy yet still has moments of great intensity. Like when Atreyu's horse dies. I would say model the movie after Atreyu in many regards and you got yourself a decent film.

3. Castlevania (Most systems) - Too soon after Van Helsing perhaps, but imagine a pissed off Belmont seeking revenge on the King of Vampires. Make it "R" rated and make him a weapons expert who battles with various weapons with the ridiculously awesome chain whip being used in the climax battle to better attack a flying Dracula.

4. Mortal Kombat (Most Systems) - They have technically made Mortal Kombat movies however they were fetid crap. So lets try again, first thing, "What made Mortal Kombat good?" Fatalities, it was their only good unique feature and when they made the movies they watered it down to nothing more than freaky Street Fighter. So make this a hard "R", and when people lose they are dealt with in the Mortal Kombat style, which is to remove your head and spike it like a football on a landmine.

I actually disagree with Dean on this one. The Scorpion vs. Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero vs. Liu Kang, and Liu Kang vs. Reptile fights were all good. The story was serviceable, and there were a few surprises along the way. The soundtrack was awesome as well. I do agree with Dean on the re-make concept. I think Mortal Kombat as a possible film mythos has loads of appeal outside of just fatalities. It has an awesome story with loads of cool characters, all of which have the potential to have great conflicts and motivations.

When I spoke of Fetid Crap I was more referring to the sequel, but I will say the first movie was far short of what it could/should have been. Which is why I would call for a redo. I would say simply take Blood Sport and add Fatalitis and creatures and you would improve on the first. Add a decent story and you got a good time at the theatre.

5. River City Ransom (NES) - You remember The Warriors? Well to open quickly the eternal argument between me and fellow contributer CJ, I thought The Warriors was garbage, however I would be open to a new attempt and River City Ransom would be a suitable storyline to do it in . Namely fight lots of odd gangs while on a simple quest, "rescue a girl" in this case, "escape the city" in The Warriors. And oddly enough the Warriors was a far better game than it was a movie. But RCR would have the additional thrills of enjoying a Sauna, and getting female clerks to smile for you for free. That alone would make it superior to The Warriors.

Dean is baiting me here so I am gonna bit like a large-mouth bass. The Warriors is a beloved cult classic which many, many people enjoy. It's a great concept and the execution was solid and entertaining for the time and era for which the movie was made. It's cool if you don't like it, but I do, and you can shut up about it. Furthermore, I don't know jack about this RCR, but I will say that the iconic movie to make with this concept was actually done once and, like, Mortal Kombat it should be re-made. I am, of course, talking about "Double Dragon". That game...oh that glorious game could make an awesome movie if it was done in an apologetic style. May take. open the movie with the dudes realizing that their girls were taken, then jump right into the action. Have them stabbing people with broken bottles. Fighting on the top level of a parking garage, beating up dudes for info, etc. As the movie progresses, get into the "why" of the kidnapping and actually reveal these two dudes are not heroic and honorable, but they are in fact, as dirty as the dudes theuy're fighting. And so on and so forth. It'd be awesome. That pitch is mine, by the way, Copyright CJ Stunkard 2007.

Feel free to chime in with additional ideas or crap on mine. CJ you have been called out. "Come out and Playyeeeyaaaaaay."

I agree with some of your selections but I don't know if I want there to ever be a Zelda movie. I like Link the way he is in video game form. Video Games that are turned into Movies fail so many times.

I can just see Ganondorf's costume and make-up being botched like a cheap 80's sci-fi alien and I can't picture any male in a green robin hood hat that could actually make Link's character look cool.

I think some of the Clancy games would translate well to movie but that's obvious since they are originaly based on books. I wouldn't mind seeing Sam Fisher stalk some Georgian terrorists though.

Hey CJ, did you see the actual Double Dragon movie starring Mark Dacascos? I was wondering if it had any value. Double Dragon is similar in that it is the story of two guys going to save a girl. but River City Ransom has many gangs which Double Dragon lacks in a way. And I thought that element may make it more appealing to you especially since it is closer to The Warriors.

Bobby, I agree that a Green Tunic is less likely to be awesome but I will say one thing. Robin Hood. That guy rocks the green pretty hard, and is not gay even while playing Brian Adams. I would say give him a Earth toned suit and maybe a green hat. But I don't think the movie has to be married to a green outfit. As for Ganondorf, he is shrouded in shadows in many of the games and I would like to continue that idea with a Shadow lurking dark figure. That could be cool.

I saw the flic, adn it was pretty awful. As bad if not worse than Alien Resurrection. I will conceded your point that RCTR could make for a better movie. beating up one gang of jumps is never as fun as 8 gangs of chumps. Good Work, bud.
