Top 5 Mindless Comedies

I don't want to sound like I am bashing these movies by deeming them "mindless" but these are comedies that really only exist to drive comedy and don't work too hard for any other purpose such as a message, drama, etc. I am interested in some of my peers thoughts but here is my list.

5. Ernest Films - Especially Goes to Jail, and Goes to Camp

While they are better viewed as a child I still find those two films hilarious today, although you could say that they include moral lessons for kids.

Ernest is at his corny best in these two without cheesing it up too much as he did in every other Ernest Film.

4. Happy Gilmore - I think this is still Adam Sandler's best work in straight comedy, while some of his may be good romantic comedies.

It is impossible to deny his co-stars who are all perfect, namely Carl Weathers as his coach, and Christopher McDonald as one of the greatest villians of all time. And then if you consider two of the best cameos in the history of films, Bob Barker as himself who gets in a fistfight with Happy, and Richard Kiel (who should be in more films, and maybe even resurrected in the next Bond Film) you get pure comic gold.

3. Anchorman - This film has grown on me quite a bit and I rewatched it just a week or so ago. It contains the scene that probably made me laugh out loud the most in my life which featured Jack Black punt kicking a dog off a bridge. Will Ferrell is at his best, and many of his performances anymore are very similar but not as strong as the Anchorman character. His supporting cast are amazing which include Steve Carrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Fred Willard, Chris Parnell, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Tim Robbins, Fred Armison, and Ben Stiller. The battle royale was good enough to earn a spot on this list by itself.

2. The Jerk - It fells a little dated but I still laugh out loud watching this film and I have seen it more than any film on this list. Steve Martin is brilliant as a buffoon, and he set the standards for the mindless comedy.

1. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure - I debated with myself if this was a mindless comedy at all, but I decided that since it featured a very simple story and only developed Pee-Wee and even then only a little I felt it qualified and then won the top spot. This film has everything you want in a comedy as long as you allow yourself to enjoy it, which is its biggest downfall. Too many people fear this film because of what they think others will say about them watching it. Well do yourself a big favor and watch this film if you haven't yet, and if you have watch it again for me.
I still watch anything with Paul Reubens to this day.

Top 5 Most Anticipated Flics for summer 2007.

Hi all,

C.J. here with a post that we'd love all of you to weigh in on as well. What movies are YOU looking forward to most in Summer of 2007 (for the industry that is basically the second weekend in April through the third weekend in August). Here are mine, with link to their trailers (click on the movie title): Agree? Disagree? Got others? Comment it up!

5) Spider-man 3: I love the other Spider-man movies, but this one looks overly crammed with villains and kinda lame sauce. I trust the team behind it, so I have hope, but it looks weak. I just hope I am wrong.

4) Evan Almighty: Steve Carrell is building an ark...What more does anyone want in a summer comedy?

3) The Simpsons Movie: I can't imagine this being bad.

2) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End: Didn't like the first one that much. hated the seoncd one. Saw the trailer for this one, and I am ecstatic. Sailing off the edge of the earth! A union of Pirate clans! A swordfight between Sparrow and Davy Jones!! Sold.

1) Transformers: I wasn't excited about this at all, but John Campea and Company over at The Movie Blog wouldn't shut up about it, and I have become completely suckered into the hype. The trailers and the TV spots look awesome. I hope the whole movie is just as good.

Although I do wish to see all those films, my list switches things up and adds two titles, amazingly my top two you denied.

5. The Transformers - I enjoyed the classic movie but I skipped the show and most of the toys as a youth. But I can't imagine this not being entertaining. Plus, the announcement of Hugo Weaving as Megatron, does anyone other than James Earl Jones or Keith David have a better voice then this guy?

4. Pirates 2.5 - The second one crushed me by not being a complete movie and I look forward to wiping that awful taste out of my mouth with Pirates 2.5 which is also being called Pirates 3 or At World's End.

3. Spider-Man 2 - I loved the first two, and Venom is involved in this. Good Enough for me. But I will be sad knowing that this is the last with the full crew together. Although I won't miss Kirsten Dunst.

2. Grindhouse - Tarantino and Rodriguez together making a unique film experience which I will line up to see. I also love Kurt Russell, and I hope this means we get more action fare from him in future years. Some of the best action films ever fell from this man.

1. Aqua Teen Hunger Force - CJ this not making your list astonishes me. Not a single other movie thrills me at the mere mention of its name. This movie will be awesome. And they get some credit for making the best trailer of all time. (Once I remember how to make hyperlinks I will being linking to things I reference)

As for the ones I skipped that you chose.

I don't find myself not thrilled at all about The Simpsons, I mean I have the chance to see it for free every Sunday night and I usually don't take the time to watch it. Although, if a few people watch it and tell me its worth a theatre viewing I will see it.

The same goes for Evan Almighty, it looks funny but unless I am commanded to see it, I will wait for DVD on that.

Dean, Your selections are all on my "to See" list. Grindhouse, in particualr is a movie I am very excited about seeing--especially for Kurt Russell as you ahve pointed out. I am sorry my excitement for Aqua Teen's was unable to compete with The legacy of the Simpsons or the hilarity of Steve Carrell--to each his own. I am excited for ATHF Colon Movie Film Theatres, especially cause of Carl and that ridiculous flaming chicken. In fact, I recently picked up seaons 1-3 of ATHF (at gamestop for $40 total). Also, I have some honorable mentions to put into the mist: Harry Potter and the hotness of Emma Watso---I mean Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,Shrek the 3rd, Fracture, Pathfinder, and Die hard 4.

I have been looking forward to Hot Fuzz, made by the same guys who did Shaun of the Dead which I really liked.
